INTRODUCTION

Gum print is a contact printing process in which the image is formed on a coating of sensitized gum containing pigment. Exposure to UV light makes it insoluble to water hence when the exposed paper is developed in water the pigmented shadows remain while the highlights are washed clean.

The gum print process can be made to yield prints of great beauty.  Gum print has a distinctive character of its own. for an overview one can visit to www.alternativephotography.com  and here.

 Our Approach:

The medium is one of the earliest process for photography printmaking . This historical method is versatile in nature and could be manipulated according to the artist’s need. Other than photographic images there are possibilities of printing from handmade negatives, photograms extra. Hence the workshop is not only for those artist who work with camera but its open for all artists who are interested to work with Light sensitive pigmented gum on paper.

Workshop on Ambrotype:

13 to 15 Aug 2019

(13 evening 14 & 15 Morning Session )

INTRODUCTION

A glass plate is coated with salted collodion and dipped inside silver nitrate chamber for 3 minutes thus the plate became sensitive to light. The plate is exposed inside a plate camera and developed. This is how a positive image is produce. The positive image is seen against a black/ darken paper, cloth etc.

Tintype is a variant of the collodion process; devised by Frederick Scott Archer in collaboration with Peter W.Fry in 1851. Mainlly used for portraiture as a cheap substitute for Daguerreotype.

For more details about the process please click here.

A film on Ambrotype: “A Quiet Riot” (A Quiet Riot - the ambrotypes of Eric Antoine, brings you an intimate view of the French photographer's wet collodion photography.)

Our Approach:

The medium is one of the earliest processes for photography invented in 1851. This historical method is versatile in nature and can be manipulated according to the artist’s need. The workshop is open for photographers, historians, artists, curators or anyone interested to learn this almost 164 years old process related to photography. No experience is necessary for this unique workshop.

The studio is equipped with all the facility where one can make Tintype/ ambrotype with using atlist    three difrent size cameras.

Maximum number of participant: 03

The workshop covers:

  • Introduction to wet plate collodion photography.

  • Preparing the salted collodion, silver nitrate bath etc.

  • Preparing Glass plate for making photographs,

  • Hand tinting Ambrotype with colors.

  • Varnishing Ambrotype.

What you will learn during the workshop:

  • How to make wet plate collodion positive images( Ambrotype).

  • How to make collodion, Silver Bath and other related process.

  • How to use Plate camera

  • How to tint collodion images with color.

Workshop on Albumen Print:20 to 22 Aug 2019

( 20 evening 21 &22 Morning)

1/3

Introduction:

Silver and gold particles formed image on paper in a matrix of egg white is called Albumen prints.  The process was invented in 1847 and became the most important medium of photography printing process. Such prints constitute by far the largest category of objects in 19th century photographic collections. Albumen paper became the most widely used photographic printing material about 1855, and remained so until 1895; it did not disappear completely from photographic practice until the 1920's.

Our Approach:

Albumen printing process is a contact print process. Earlier it's been printed from glass plate negative of the same size. Later when the size of the negative became smaller in size and the printing process shifted to silver gelatin by using enlarger.

In this workshop we will make digital negative from digital images and produce a large size negative to print. We will learn how to make albumen paper from egg white, how to make it sensitive to print and how to process with gold salt.  We will also discuss the aesthetic of albumen print and contemporary digital ink jet print.

Maximum number of participant: 05

The workshop covers:

  • Introduction to the history of Albumen Print .

  • Preparing Digital Negative.

  • Preparing salted Albumen solution from egg white

  • Preparing Albumen Paper

  • Preparing printing frame,

  • printing the Albumen paper.

  • Coloring albumen print with gold solutions..

What you will learn during the workshop

  • How to make Digital Negative for Albumen Print

  • how to make Albumen Paper

  • How to process it

  • How to print Albumen Paper with silver Salt.

  • Various formula of Albumen print

  • How to make Gold toner etc

All the participants will be provided with:

  • Breakfast, Lunch for morning session & diner for evening session,  tea /coffee, will be provided during the workshop

  • Materials necessary for making Albumen Print,

Workshop on Making of Pinhole Camera, negatives using X-ray film and printing with cyanotype. :  9th to 12th  Sept 2019

( 9th Evening 10 to 12 Morning session)

Overview

The workshop will be divided in to two parts. We will talk about the various and diverse possibility of handmade photography by making camera in the beginning. The participants will make their own Pinhole camera to capture images on x-ray flim. The pinhole camera will be made out of found container or container linked with personal memories (expecting participants will get the container from their home and it could be of any size any materials)

Pinhole camera needs a longer exposure to capture any image; hence an element of performance is expected in the resulted images which will be captured on medical X-Ray film.

In the second part the images which been captured will be printed on paper using historical methods of photographic printmaking like cyanotype.

Objectives

The workshop will introduce the history and contemporary practice of photographic image making to the participants. It will enable the participants to make their own simple photographic equipments and learn the craft of photography. The workshop will address and explore the possibilities of the 'photographic language'.

Number of Participants: 05

The workshop covers:

  • Introduction to rudimentary process of camera making.

  • Introduction to use X-Ray film as large format film for pinhole camera

  • Making Cyanotype print on paper from images clicked in this workshop

  • Preparing the camera from any container/ box .

  • Preparing developer, fixer for X-ray film processing,

  • Preparing cyanotype chemicals and paper for printing

What you will learn during the workshop:

  • How to make pinhole camera/ how to convert any container to a camera

  • How to make X-Ray film negative using your own handmade camera

  • How to process X-Ray film

  • How to make cyanotype print out of the negative you produced in this workshop

All the participants will be provided with:

  • Breakfast, Lunch for morning session & diner for evening session,  tea /coffee, will be provided during the workshop
